چکیده
___________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: Edges of prosodic and morphological constituents often behave differently from non-edge positions, but it is not always clear how such edge-effects are brought about. This paper is a case study of an edge-phenomenon in different varieties of German. Thus, glottal stop epenthesis is limited to edges of morphemes in Southern German, but not in Standard German and insertion of a dissimilatory feature in /sC/ clusters is limited to root edges in Standard German, though not in some Southern varieties. I argue that an analysis in terms of optimality theory (Prince/Smolensky 1993) based on ranked, violable constraints can best account for these facts: high ranking of a constraint banning domain-internal epenthesis (O-CONTIGUITY) with respect to insertion triggering constraints can explain the restriction to edges, low ranking of the same constraint will result in application of epenthesis or dissimilation also inside the specified domain. Moreover, the implementation of the analysis in terms of optimality theory can shed light on this typical pattern of variation among closely related varieties of the same language: the difference between the variety where a process takes place everywhere and the variety where the same process applies only at edges will be analyzed as a minimal difference in faithfulness of the two grammars involved. ___________________________________________________________________________

The dark side of glottal stop epenthesis in German : Comparative markedness and structure preservation
Recent accounts of consonant epenthesis either predict the locus of and give structural motivation for epenthesis (Prince & Smolensky 1993, Alber 2001 among others), such as the requirement for syllables to start in a consonantal onset or the breaking up of a vowel sequence or they explain the choice of segment, i.e., why languages prefer the glottal stop, the coronal stop or some other consona...
متن کاملNatural Phonological Processes in Sistani Persian of Iran
This article provides an overview of natural phonological processes in the dialect of Sistani Persian spoken in Iranian Sistan, and reviews theoretical implications of these processes. A representative selection of processes in the language is examined in reference to conditioning by surrounding segments and conditioning in reference to syllable structure. While assimilation and dissimilation a...
متن کاملInterruption glottalization in German spontaneous speech
This paper analyzes the occurrence of phonetic interruption cues at points of syntactic irregularities (false starts and truncations) in a large annotated corpus of German dialogues and compares interruption glottalization with laryngealization in terminal low phrase-final prosodies. Glottalization (including glottal stop) predominantly marks word fragments, whereas non-verbal insertions, e.g. ...
متن کاملAnalyzing patterns of glottalization in German stops
This paper presents a new method of analyzing and quantifying glottalization patterns in speech sounds, demonstrated through an analysis of glottalized stops in Standard German. Acoustic studies have shown that instances of stop glottalization, in which the glottis is assumed to be constricted, can have a range of acoustic correlates, including glottal stops and stretches of irregularity in fun...
متن کاملWord-initial glottal stop insertion, hiatus resolution and linking in British English
Glottal stop insertion at word boundaries is usually not included in descriptions of the phonology of Southern Standard British English (BrE), and little is known about the factors that determine it. This paper investigates the insertion of glottal stops before vowels at word boundaries (e.g. pronounced as [taUnPIz]) in the spontaneous and read speech of 10 speakers of BrE. Results sh...
